MEDIA RELEASE

DEADLINE PASSES FOR TASSIE HOUSING DEAL

Eight weeks ago Finance Minister Mathias Cormann told the Senate that the Government would do something to fix the housing crisis in Tasmania in six to eight weeks:

“… we have agreed over the next six to eight weeks, or thereabouts, that we’ll work this issue through…”

Senator Cormann – Hansard – 4 July 2019

That deadline came and went yesterday and still nothing has been announced to fix the housing crisis in Tasmania.

In July the Government did a deal to fix Tasmania’s housing crisis – if its tax legislation passed.

Its now time to honour the deal.

Tasmania has a real housing crisis.

Homelessness is up and there has been a 20 per cent increase in the number of people accessing help from homelessness and crisis housing services.

The government did a deal to fix this. They promised they would do something by now. They haven’t.

It’s time to honour this deal.
