PRESS CONFERENCE
SYDNEY
SATURDAY, 16 APRIL 2022

SUBJECTS: 2022 election; Anti-Corruption Commission.

JASON CLARE, LABOR CAMPAIGN SPOKESPERSON:When something’s rotten, you throw it away, and this government is rotten to the bone. We’ve seen plenty of evidence of that just in the last week. We saw it this week in the cover up of half a million dollars of taxpayer’s money paid out to a former government staffer because of the actions of Minister Alan Tudge. If Alan Tudge did nothing wrong, why is half a million dollars of your money being paid out in compensation? And if he has done something wrong, why is he still in Cabinet?

This week, the Prime Minister has refused time after time to answer any questions about this, saying it’s not his job. Well, it is his job. He’s the Prime Minister of Australia. This is his Cabinet Minister. This is a former government staffer, and this is half a million dollars of your money. The Australian people have a right to know what’s happened here. And Alan Tudge should come out of “witness protection” and explain why half a million dollars of taxpayers’ money has had to be forked out in compensation because of his actions.

You see also how rotten this government is, in their actions 10 minutes to midnight, before this election was called, in appointing a whole bunch of Liberal mates to government jobs. Some of those jobs are worth up to half a million dollars. Ten minutes to midnight, before the election was called, they’re reaching into your pocket and putting that money into their mate’s pockets. This is like somebody who books into a hotel and doesn’t just steal the shampoo or conditioner, or the bathrobe. They’re stealing the TV and the lounge and the bed.

Scott Morrison and his government are holding the Australian people in contempt, and you see that again today in his refusal to commit to setting up a National Anti-Corruption Commission. If you don’t think there’s corruption in Canberra, you’re not looking for it. You can see it on Scott Morrison’s front bench. There are more smoking guns on his front bench than in a Clint Eastwood movie. The only way that we’re going to set up an Anti-Corruption Commission is if Labor wins this election.

If you want to end the sleaze, you’ve got to vote for Albanese. Thanks very much.
