Doorstop Interview – Canberra – Monday, 24 November 2014

SUBJECTS: Cuts to the ABC and SBS; Tony Abbott’s broken promises

JASON CLARE, SHADOW MINISTER FOR COMMUNICATIONS: People don’t like liars, and there is one thing worse than lying and that’s lying about lying and that’s what we saw last week in the aftermath of the Government’s broken promise about “no cuts to the ABC, and no cuts to SBS”.

Last week we saw Mathias Cormann try and use the Jedi Mind Trick and say there were no cuts and then we saw Malcolm Turnbull act more like Denis Denuto from The Castle where he was saying it’s all “the context”.

There’s an old saying in politics, that it’s not the crime, it’s the cover-up that kills you. The Government has to be very careful here because people don’t like liars but they also don’t like people lying about the lies that they’ve told. This Government has lied the Australian people about ABC, about SBS, about their promises not to cut health, or education or the pensions.

Happy to take questions.

JOURNALIST: Inaudible.

CLARE: Any organisation can be more efficient whether it’s the ABC or whether it’s a private company. The point here is Tony Abbott said the night before the election no ifs, no buts there would be “no cuts to the ABC”. We are holding him to his word.

Thanks very much.
