NEW LOCAL GOVERNMENT BUSHFIRE ANNOUNCEMENT
Labor welcomes the Government’s announcement today of $60 million to be made available to bushfire affected councils.
It’s important that this money is made immediately available to help local communities recover.
Local councils are best placed to respond to the immediate needs of their communities and to support local contractors and local businesses.
More funding than this will be required and it’s important that the Federal Government sits down and listens to local councils to make sure they get the resources they need to rebuild their local communities.
The bushfire emergency is a national crisis which requires a national response.
The Prime Minister should now convene a meeting of COAG as early as possible to ensure all efforts of state and territory governments are co-ordinated with those of the Commonwealth.
