AUSTRALIANS SHOULD KNOW BENEFITS BEFORE TRADE DEAL IS SIGNED
Labor looks forward to examining the details of the free trade agreement signed with Peru today and urges Turnbull to conduct independent modelling on the trade agreement with Peru to give Australians confidence in its benefits.
Peru is currently Australia’s 53rd largest trading partner.
Labor supports high quality trade deals that benefit Australian workers, farmers and businesses.
Australia is a trading nation and we hope that this agreement will lead to more Australian jobs and more Australian exports.
We are concerned that there has been no independent economic analysis of this agreement to date.
Labor announced last week that it would conduct independent modelling of each new free trade agreement before it is signed to increase transparency and help address growing scepticism of trade.
Business groups, unions and Liberal members of the Parliamentary committee that scrutinises trade deals after they’re done all agree that independent modelling should be required on all new free trade agreements.
Labor will do it. We urge Turnbull to do it for this and any other future trade deals.
