Two years on from the 2013 election, Tony Abbott and Malcolm Turnbull’s plans for the National Broadband Network are in tatters.
They promised that they would build it for $29.5 billion – that has now blown out to almost double that cost at $56 billion.
They promised the NBN would be rolled out to all homes and businesses within three years (by the end of 2016) – that’s now more than doubled to 7 years (by the end of 2020).
Two years ago tomorrow, on the night of the 2013 election, Tony Abbott wrote an open letter to the Australian people that was published in news.com.au. In it he said:
“I want our NBN to be rolled out within three years and Malcolm Turnbull is the right person to make this happen.”
That is not going to happen and Malcolm Turnbull has no-one to blame for that but himself.
The NBN is rolling out slower than Malcolm Turnbull promised, and it is more expensive than he promised.
The NBN has become just another victim of two years of dysfunction and disunity from a Government distracted by itself.
The Australian people have every right to feel they have been duped, ripped off and lied to by Tony Abbott and Malcolm Turnbull – because they have.
Australia can’t afford another three years of Abbott and Turnbull’s Liberals.
