Abbott’s lies starting to hit drama and kids TV

Reports in The Australian newspaper today confirm that Tony Abbott’s broken promises on the ABC have led to funding being ripped out of drama and children’s TV.

The night before the last election, Tony Abbott promised:

“No cuts to education, no cuts to health, no change to pensions, no change to the GST and no cuts to ABC or SBS.”

                                                                                                                                   TONY ABBOTT– 6 SEPTEMBER 2013

He then broke that promise cutting more than half a billion dollars out of the ABC and SBS.

At the time, Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull said that these broken promises would only affect “back-of-house” operations. That was another lie.

Since then production facilities have been shut down, regional radio stations are gone, over 200 jobs have been lost with over 300 still on the chopping block and now the ABC’s much-loved drama and kids content is being cut.

In The Australian today ABC’s Director of TV Richard Finlayson confirms:

“We have been open with the sector that last year’s budget cuts have led to some reductions in children’s and drama funding.”

Tony Abbott’s half a billion dollar broken promise is now hurting Australia’s drama and children’s TV production industry and everyone who watches and loves the ABC.

Tony Abbott and Malcolm Turnbull cannot be trusted with the ABC and SBS.
