Senate orders Turnbull to release NBN business case

The Australian Senate today passed a motion ordering Malcolm Turnbull to release the full business case for his second rate NBN.

This document should be released so the Australian people can see how much Malcolm Turnbull’s second rate NBN will cost and when it will be finished.

In Opposition and in the early stages of Government, Malcolm Turnbull liked to talk about how transparent NBN Co would be under his watch. He has said:

“Maximum transparency is going to be given to this project.”

“But our commitment is, our focus is, to have a much greater level of transparency and openness.”

“The bottom line is that as far as the NBN project is concerned, the government’s commitment is to be completely transparent.”

“The main promise, the most important thing we said about the NBN was that we would tell the truth, and we would liberate the management of NBN Co to tell that truth.”

“You will be aware that Government policy provides for increased security and transparency of NBN Co and its activities.”

“The Government requires a high degree of transparency from NBN Co in its communication with the public and Parliament.”

The reality is very different.

NBN Co under Malcolm Turnbull is as secretive as Area 51.

It has been more than 18 months since NBN Co have released a headline forecast about how much his second rate NBN will cost and how long it will take to build.

Malcolm Turnbull has failed to live up to his own hype.

The Senate today ordered Malcolm Turnbull to release the NBN business case and the unredacted version of the Strategic Review.

The Senate order stipulates that these documents should be released by 3:30pm on Thursday.

The clock is ticking Malcolm.
