Labor wishes the players, coaches and support staff of the Townsville Fire and the Bendigo Spirit good luck ahead of today’s WNBL Grand Final.
Playing in the Grand Final is the culmination of months of hard work and is an opportunity for the players to showcase the skill, determination and team work that has taken them all the way to the final match of the season.
Today’s Grand Final is also the last WNBL game to be broadcast on ABC television.
The WNBL is another victim of Tony Abbott and Malcolm Turnbull’s broken promise not to cut the ABC and SBS.
On the night before the election Tony Abbott promised there would be “no cuts to the ABC or SBS”. Yet, since the election Tony Abbott and Malcolm Turnbull have cut more than half a billion dollars out of the ABC and SBS.
It’s disgraceful that women’s sport is suffering as a result of a broken promise from Tony Abbott, Australia’s Minister for Women.
These athletes, clubs and fans should not have to pay for Mr Abbott’s shameful broken promise.
