80 more victims of Tony Abbott’s lies

The 80 people who have today lost their jobs at the ABC have become the latest victims of Tony Abbott’s lies.

On the night before the 2013 Federal Election Tony Abbott promised on SBS News:

“No cuts to education, no cuts to health, no change to pensions, no change to the GST and no cuts to the ABC or SBS.”

That was a lie. On budget night Tony Abbott cut $232.3 million from the ABC including the abolition of the Australia Network.

Today’s job losses are a direct consequence of Tony Abbott’s lies.

In a statement released on Budget night, ABC managing director Mark Scott said:

“…the funding cuts would regrettably and inevitably result in redundancies and a reduction in services.”

Today those redundancies have become a reality. Next on the chopping block could be ABC services and programs like regional radio, drama and children’s television shows.

In his first press conference as Prime Minister Tony Abbott said:

“I don’t intend on making promises that I won’t keep.”

Today, 80 Australians who work for the ABC know more than most that this was a lie.
