Senate directs Turnbull to come out of the Kremlin

In Opposition Malcolm Turnbull liked to say that NBN Co was “more secretive than the Kremlin.”

But in Government he has taken up residence in Red Square.

In Opposition he introduced a private member’s bill demanding that NBN Co release its Corporate Plan.

In Government he has refused to release the Corporate Plan.

The Senate today passed a motion demanding that the Corporate Plan be released.

Malcolm Turnbull has promised transparency not once…not twice…but repeatedly.

“Maximum transparency is going to be given to this project.”

“But our commitment is, our focus is, to have a much greater level of transparency and openness.”

“The bottom line is that as far as the NBN project is concerned, the government’s commitment is to be completely transparent.”

“The main promise, the most important thing we said about the NBN was that we would tell the truth, and we would liberate the management of NBN Co to tell that truth.”

“You will be aware that Government policy provides for increased security and transparency of NBN Co and its activities.”

“The Government requires a high degree of transparency from NBN Co in its communication with the public and Parliament.”

Malcolm Turnbull has failed to live up to his own rhetoric. He has ducked and weaved to avoid scrutiny of his second-rate NBN.

The NBN Co Corporate Plan has been sitting on his desk for more than four months but he has refused to release it. What does he have to hide?

Today the Senate gave him a direction that the NBN Co Corporate Plan should be made public no later than 3:30pm on Monday the 24th of November 2014.

If Malcolm Turnbull fails to finally release the NBN Co Corporate Plan by that date, he will not only be failing to live up to the test he set for himself, he will be holding the Australian Senate and through them the Australian people in contempt.
