47 local students recognised at 2019 Community Service Awards

Federal Member for Blaxland, Jason Clare MP has once again recognised the outstanding efforts of 47 local students at his eleventh annual Community Service Awards Ceremony held at Bankstown Sports Club.

The special presentation ceremony to acknowledge and celebrate the enormous contribution students make to their school and our wider community was attended by over 300 guests including families, school principals and teachers.

“These awards recognise students from 47 schools across Blaxland for the outstanding work they do in our local community. They have all done something special that makes them a local hero,” Mr Clare said.

“Hudayfah Ali, Year 6 student from Bankstown Public School played an integral role in the school transition for a student with a complex physical disability who is currently in a wheelchair as they moved from a hospital setting to a school setting.”

“Hayden Morris, Year 6 student from Milperra Public School contributed to the school and wider community through his business ‘Garden Gold’, in which he sells worm juice from his garage, using money earnt to invest in his business and donate to charities like the Cancer Council.”

“Year 11 student Maya Alameddine from Auburn Girls High School co-organised whole school initiatives including the Bi-weekly Breakfast Club, as well as volunteering her time for various causes such as Jeans for Genes Day and the Annual Bring It Home Donation Drive.”

“And our youngest student on the night was Ella Yaghi, a Year 2 student from Sefton Infants School who assists in the operation of weekly ice-block and popcorn stalls which raise funds for charities such as the RSPCA and Cystic Fibrosis Association.”

“Our community has a proud tradition of community service – I congratulate and thank all the students for their efforts to uphold this tradition,” Mr Clare said.

The guest speaker at the presentation ceremony was a very special student, Alexia Plakidis who captivated award recipients and their families with her inspiring story of leadership and compassion.

Inspired by her dad who had cancer almost 20 years ago, this year Alexia decided to make a difference by raising money for the Starlight Foundation.

Alexia promised that if she raised $10,000 for the Foundation she would cut off her long hair. This week she hit the $10,000 mark and her long hair was cut off.

During this event, the students recognised for their admirable achievements were presented with an official certificate.
