48 local students recognised at 2018 Community Service Awards

Federal Member for Blaxland, Jason Clare MP has once again recognised the outstanding efforts of 48 local students at his tenth annual Community Service Awards Ceremony held at Bankstown Sports Club.

The special presentation ceremony to acknowledge and celebrate the enormous contribution students make to their school and our wider community was attended by over 300 guests including families, school principals and teachers.

“These awards recognise students from 48 schools across Blaxland for the outstanding work they do in our local community. They have all done something special that makes them a local hero,” Mr Clare said.

“Margarita Gianna, Year 12 student from St Euphemia College led an initiative to raise money from the school community to go towards the burial site of a student who had recently passed away from cancer.”

“Jack Pragnall, Year 11 student from Bass High School plays a leading role in mentoring SRC student groups and often visits Veterans in nursing homes. Jack also recently represented the local Army Cadets for Commemoration of Remembrance Day in France.”

“Year 4 student Antonio Elaro from St Felix Catholic Primary School works tirelessly to maintain the school environment, often seen at lunchtime picking up papers, weeding the gardens, watering and planting new plants. Antonio is also a buddy to a special needs student in Kindergarten.”

“Our community has a proud tradition of community service – I congratulate and thank all the students for their efforts to uphold this tradition,” Mr Clare said.

Guest speakers at the presentation ceremony included two very special students, Walid Kurdi and Caitlin Seckold who captivated award recipients and their families with their inspiring stories of leadership and compassion.

Walid Kurdi former year 12 student from Condell Park High School spoke about the important role he played in the schools ‘Talk Time’ program which assists students from the Autism Support Unit.

Year 4 student Caitlin Seckold from Milperra Public School spoke about her extraordinary fundraising efforts, which include a 100km bike ride to raise money for children at Westmead Children’s Hospital and running a special Christmas project that involves packing shoeboxes with toys, clothes, stationery and hygiene items and shipping them overseas where they are distributed to children in need.

During this event, the students recognised for their admirable achievements were presented with an official certificate.
