8 more life savers for Bankstown

Federal Member for Blaxland Jason Clare MP and Mayor of the City of Canterbury Bankstown, Cr Khal Asfour today announced that a further eight new lifesaving defibrillators have been allocated to sporting clubs around Bankstown.

This brings the total to 24 lifesaving defibrillators that Mr Clare has funded for Bankstown sporting clubs.

The eight additional clubs that will receive a lifesaving defibrillator are:

  1. Bass Hill Broncos JRLFC
  2. Bankstown Sports JRLFC
  3. Chester Hill Hornets JRLFC
  4. Bankstown Bulls JRLFC
  5. Bankstown Sports Baseball
  6. Bankstown District Cricket Club
  7. Georges River Thistles Football Club
  8. Bankstown Sports Little Athletics Club

“This is lifesaving equipment. Every minute counts when someone has a heart attack. According to St John Ambulance the use of a defibrillator and CPR within 2 – 3 minutes of a heart attack increases the survival rate to 75 percent,” Mr Clare said.

“Every year 33,000 Australians suffer a sudden cardiac arrest. It can happen to anyone regardless of your age or fitness.”

“Heart attacks are a leading cause of death in Australia, so these defibrillators could mean the difference between life and death,” Mayor of the City of Canterbury Bankstown, Khal Asfour, said.

“It’s now up to the clubs to make sure their members receive the all-important training to use these devices.”

In 2014 there were five deaths on football fields within Sydney.

Defibrillators are used to detect a patient’s heart rhythm and, if needed, automatically administer a shock to re-establish a normal rhythm. The defibrillators have been designed to be easy to use and the user is guided using visual and voice prompts.

16 Bankstown clubs have already received a defibrillator as part of Jason Clare’s Stronger Communities Programme:

  1. Birrong Sports FC
  2. Bankstown Sport Stars FC
  3. Bankstown Dragons FC
  4. Condell Park FC
