Karitane gets funding back

Federal Member for Blaxland, Jason Clare welcomes the latest backflip by the Abbott Government that will restore funding to Karitane’s Talking Realities program.

The Department of Social Services’ gap analysis found that the Abbott Government’s decision to cut funding to countless local community services, like Karitane, created critical frontline service gaps.

Just before Christmas last year the Abbott Government advised Karitane that it will no longer receive funding for its Talking Realities program that has been running across Bankstown, Fairfield and Liverpool Local Government Areas for seven years.

The Abbott Government now realises that there is no alternative service to Karitane’s Talking Realities Program and has now offered to provide $290,472 in funding and extend their contract for 2 years.

“The Abbott Government’s original decision to cut Karitane’s funding was short-sighted and cruel. Even the Abbott Government’s own department agreed that it was unfair,” Mr Clare said.

“This is a great victory for local families.

“Without this funding Karitane would not be able to continue to help young mums back into the workforce,” Mr Clare said.
