“This is great news for Bankstown. It will create local construction jobs and provide a new home for local artists and community groups,” Mr Clare said.
“The centre is already a great place for people to meet, learn, perform and be inspired. This will make Bankstown Arts Centre even better,” Mr Melham said.
The $3.15 million funding is part of the Rudd Government’s $800 million Community Infrastructure Program – the largest ever one-off investment in local infrastructure in Australia’s history.
Federal funding will contribute to the overall project which will:
- Support local arts groups such as The Bankstown Arts Society, The Bankstown Theatrical Society, The Bankstown and District Lapidary Club, Urban Theatre Project, The Bankstown Youth Development Service and CityMoon.
- Include a theatre, two rehearsal rooms, two project rooms, a foyer, an exhibition space, meeting rooms and a café.
- Encourage wider community participation in arts related activities.
Construction of the new Bankstown Arts Centre will start later this year.
