“Bankstown is the home of a lot of Australian sporting heroes and this will help breed the next generation,” Mr Clare said.
Member for Banks, Daryl Melham added, “This is a huge win for the Bankstown community and for the Bankstown Cricket Club”.
“Bankstown Cricket Club has a long history of producing international, state and district cricketers, the most famous being the Waugh brothers; Grahame Thomas, Jeff Thomson, Steve Smith and Len Pascoe. The facility means that the Cricket Club will continue to produce quality players.”
“The facility will be utilised by the community and also showcase Bankstown with the potential for state, national and international cricket matches.”
“In the past funding has been provided by local clubs and the broader community. With this Commonwealth funding we will, for the first time, have a genuine community partnership through funding at federal, state and local level,” Mr Clare said.
“Council is pleased to partner with the Federal Government to deliver this world class multi purpose sports facility which will house our Sporting Hall of Fame,” said Mayor of Bankstown Councillor Khal Asfour.
“Council will now call for tenders for this project as one further step towards establishing Bankstown City as the premier hub of sports in Sydney,” said Mayor Asfour.
