“The Local Sporting Champions program is another example of the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting young people.

“This program is about recognising and supporting our young sporting talent,” said Mr Clare.

Mr Clare visited the Ruth Everuss Aquatic Centre to chat to the swimmers before their weekly training session.

Nine members of the Auburn Swimming Club attended the Winter State Swimming Championships over the weekend – taking first place in both the U15 medley and freestyle relay.

The Coach of Auburn Swimming Club, Mr Misha Payne, said “This is a great boost for our small club. This grant will allow us to update our training and gym equipment – things like cardio monitors, swimming bungie straps and medicine balls.

“It will also support our young swimmers competing at the State and National Championships next year,” Mr Payne said.

Individual grants of $500 and team grants of $3,000 are available to help meet costs such as travel, equipment, uniforms and accommodation.

Grant applications are assessed three times a year. Round two closes on Wednesday 31 October.
