Carers Week runs from 14- 20 October.

Carers week is a national celebration that recognises 2.6 million Australian carers who are making a difference in the lives of others.

“This week is about recognising the commitment and contribution that Carers make in our local community every day,” Mr Clare said.

“The National Disability Insurance Scheme will ensure that people living with a disability, their families and carers are provided with the care and support they need.

“This means that any Australian who acquires a disability or who is born with a disability can have confidence that they will be provided with care and support.”

The Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities and Carers, Senator Jan McLucas, said the Government is delivering $1 billion for the launch of a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in mid-2013.

“More than 20,000 Australians with disability, their families and carers will benefit from the first stage of an NDIS from the middle of next year.”

“The NDIS will build on the steps our government has already taken to support carers, such as historic increases to the Carer Payment, a permanent $600 Carer Supplement, and a $53.4 million boost to respite services for carers of people with severe mental illness.”

Mr Clare congratulated the Recreation Sports and Aquatics Club on their ongoing commitment and dedication to promoting social inclusion for people with disability.

“The programs that are run at the Recreation Sports and Aquatics Club play an important role in creating an inclusive society for people of all abilities.”
