New sporting facilities in Bankstown

Federal Member for Blaxland, Jason Clare, today inspected the new John Mackay Memorial Oval Indoor Sports Centre with former Bankstown Sports Club Secretary, Mr John Mackay.


The $4.2 million facility at Bankstown Memorial Oval will officially open on the 3rd of March 2013 with the Memorial Oval Indoor Sports Centre named in honour of Mr Mackay.

The Federal Government contributed $2.7 million to build this fantastic new facility. The remainder of the funding was provided by: Cricket NSW, local sporting clubs and State and Local Government.

John Mackay has served in the local community of Bankstown for over 40 years.

He held the position of Secretary Manager of Bankstown Sports Club for over 25 years. During this time Bankstown Sports Club, under the guidance and stewardship of John, has contributed over $60 million to the City of Bankstown assisting local sporting groups, schools, hospitals and charities.

During his time at Bankstown Sports Club, Mr Mackay tirelessly worked to keep Bankstown Sports Club focused on supporting young, talented sporting champions by financially assisting 40 sporting clubs in the Bankstown area.


“Working with people like John Mackay is one of the great privileges of my role as the Federal Member for Blaxland,” Mr Clare said.

“As the Secretary Manager for a number of years, John worked to reinforce Bankstown Sports Club’s commitment to junior sport in Bankstown making sure that we continue to nourish our rich sporting history.

“Bankstown is the home of a lot of Australian sporting heroes and the new John Mackay Memorial Oval Indoor Sports Centre will help breed the next generation.”
