Liberals to raid Crime Fund

The Shadow Minister for Home Affairs and Shadow Minister for Justice, Jason Clare, today condemned the plan by the Abbott Government to raid the National Crime Prevention Fund and cut funding to organisations like Police Citizens Youth Clubs (PCYC).

The $40 million National Crime Prevention Fund provides funding to PCYC, Father Chris Riley’s Youth off the Streets, local councils and non-government organisations to prevent crime and help young people falling off the tracks and getting involved in crime.

Earlier this year the Attorney General’s Department considered applications from hundreds of Councils and non-government organisations across the country. The Attorney General’s Department selected the projects to be funded, based on the best submissions and focused on areas with high crime rates.

“Now the Liberal Government looks like it is going to rip this money out of the hands of organisations like PCYC and Father Chris Riley’s Youth Off the Streets”, Mr Clare said.

Minister for Justice Michael Keenan said today:

“We are in the process of advising organisations who were promised funding under the national crime prevention fund not to make any financial commitments on the basis of commitments made by the former government”.

“This Government’s priorities are all wrong. They are happy to spend taxpayers’ money on going to weddings but they are cutting millions of dollars to PCYC and other organisations to fight crime.”

“Tony Abbott needs to step in today and confirm that PCYC, Father Chris Riley’s Youth off the Streets and these other organisations will get to keep this funding.”

“If he doesn’t it will mean more crime in Western Sydney and other parts of Australia” Mr Clare said.
