Unemployment rate highest in twelve years

Australia’s unemployment rate is at its highest in 12 years, up from 6.1 per cent in May to 6.4 per cent.

Australia’s unemployment rate is now higher than the United States of America

Young people have been hit particularly hard. 14.1 per cent of 15 to 24 year olds are now unemployed and 20.4 per cent for the 15 to 19 year olds are now unemployed.

“Unemployment is going up right across Australia. This is very bad news for our local area. When unemployment goes up across Australia it goes up twice as fast in our local area,” Mr Clare said.

“Unemployment in Blaxland is almost twice the national average.

“The bad news is the budget will make this even worse. The budget cuts the successful Jobs Expos program that created more than 2000 jobs in our local area. The Abbott Government has also sacked our Local Employment Coordinator, David Puckeridge.

“This just shows Tony Abbott doesn’t get it.

“Tony Abbott promised to create a million jobs. He is now responsible for the highest unemployment rate in 12 years.”
